Purpose/Role within Organization: The role of the Peer Success Coach is to encourage student success by providing outreach, mentoring and resources. Peer Success Coaches are current SCC students who exhibit a mastery of holistic elements of academic success. Coaches help students identify obstacles to academic performance and assist them by creating solutions for overcoming those challenges. Coaches help the students to maximize their capacity for success by supporting and assisting them in the acquisition of effective study strategies and performance.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Holds drop-in coaching hours to assist students
  • Assesses student needs and provides resources.
  • Contacts students via email or telephone, making periodic check-ins and offering reminders.
  • Encourages academic excellence and success behaviors.
  • Conducts face-to-face meetings with students every four weeks.
  • Tracks and maintains accurate records of student contacts made.
  • Responsible for facilitating "student success lecture series" and "student success workshops."
  • Collaborates with Student Success Society to conduct "Study Hall" sessions.
  • Distributes student success literature.
  • Introduces services via classroom visits.
  • Offers referrals to the Academic Advising, Financial Aid, Disability Support Services, Career Services, ACE Center and other campus locations (when necessary, escort students to those offices and introduce them to the professional staff trained to assist in those areas).
  • Collaborates with multiple campus departments and acts as a liaison between students and faculty/staff.
  • Assists the Peer Mentor Program Coordinator with gathering and analyzing data to determine the program's effectiveness. Meets with the Coordinator and provides a weekly update on the progress of assigned tasks.

  • Positive, contributing member of the student body.
  • Problem-solver with the ability to locate and disseminate the appropriate resources according to student need.
  • Maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress, as defined by SCC policy.
  • Demonstrated academic success with a 3.0 GPA or higher, preferable.

 

Hours/Work Schedule: Part-time not to exceed 10 hours per week. Hours may not conflict with scheduled class times.

 

Length of Employment: A period of 16 weeks within the time frame 11/26/18 06/30/19. Renewal of the position for subsequent semesters will depend upon the student's Satisfactory Academic Progress and the availability of MDHE program funds.

 

Rate of Pay: $10/hour

 

Procedures Determining Rates of Pay: This position is part of a pilot program sponsored by the Missouri Department of Education and rates of pay are determined by that entity.
