Learning Specialist - ESL

St. Charles Community College is located just west of St. Louis, nestled in the heart of growing St. Charles County. Established in 1986, SCC is a public, comprehensive two-year community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs in the arts, business, sciences and career-technical fields. SCC also provides workforce training and community-based personal and professional development as well as cultural, recreational and entertainment opportunities.

We are seeking a part-time Learning Specialist - ESL to provide professional tutoring and educational assistance to non-native English speakers by imparting curriculum-based knowledge, guidance and supplemental classroom instruction in a variety of academic areas.

Delivers services to non-native English speaking students and the community which may include oral interview assessment, placement, and general guidance within the ELCI academic programs, planning student events, assisting with accommodations and meeting the instructional support needs of non-native English speakers.  Includes assisting students with usage of internet resources, the college connection, and audits of the ESL and English Fundamentals certificates.  Make referrals of students to appropriate College and community resources, as appropriate.                              

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnoses student academic problems, provides assistance and guidance, and instructs students in various subjects and study skills.
  • Responds to student requests, using diverse instructional strategies to facilitate student understanding, recommends various programs and instructional materials as appropriate, and offers alternative methods to students with learning difficulties and varied learning styles.
  • Plans, prepares, and delivers workshops for non-native English speakers in the English Language and Culture Institute (ELCI) per week during the semester. Reviews, evaluates, and organizes new INE and ESL materials for ACE Center use.
  • Represents the ACE Tutoring Center and ELCI at college committee meetings and special projects; coordinates ACE Tutoring Center services with other departments, specifically the ELCI, and provides necessary services to support educational activities college wide.
  • Provides plans and actions that lead to continuous improvements as required for certifications from the College and Reading Language Association (CRLA), the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) and the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).
  • Participates in professional development opportunities both on and off campus, as deemed appropriate.
  • Conducts oral interviews for placement and ESL/INE for new and current non-native English speaking students. Refers students to appropriate services, including outside agencies, as needed.
  • Provides success strategies to students who are identified as high risk (ESL referral form, success semester, academic warning, and academic probation).
  • Assists with ELCI departmental and campus functions as appropriate.
  • Promotes the ELCI to the College community and region, and coordinates with International Student Support Services to offer ESL- and INE-intensive workshops for international visiting students.
  • Tracks data and prepares reports, as assigned.
  • Participates in Strategic Planning and program assessment and review.
  • Assesses non-native English speakers listening and speaking skills and interprets assessment results in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for INE and ESL course placement.
  • Confers with faculty, staff, administration, and outside agencies and institutions, as needed.
  • Communicates with non-native speakers and advocates for unmet needs and interests.
  • Utilizes the College student information system, including electronic technology such as Degree Audit, Student Planning, student retention software, and the registration module.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required in TESOL, ESL, or related field with a graduate certificate in TESOL (must include coursework in language teaching methodologies, nature of language, structure of English, second language acquisition, intercultural communication, and practicum experience); Minimum of two years related part time work experience with emphasis in ESL instruction; minimum of one year of experience working with computer aided education and learning materials; Must be able to operate miscellaneous office equipment such as IBM compatible personal computer, Internet, word processing software, educational/instructional software, calculator, laser printer, telephone, and copier. Excellent interpersonal relations and organizational skills.

PREFEREED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in TESOL
