Academic Counselor for Allied Health

St. Charles Community College is seeking a full-time Academic Counselor for Allied Health. The Academic Counselor delivers services to students including career counseling, academic and career/technical program advising, planning and participating in student events, assisting with accommodations and meeting the academic advising needs of Allied Health students.

This position is 100% externally funded (Perkins Grant).

General Advising/Career-Technical

  • Advises and counsels career-technical, deciding, and transfer undergraduate students integrating student-centered focus on academic advising, career exploration and financial aid counseling for course selections.
  • Maintains confidential student files and records, documenting all pertinent academic information within the student database system, upholding FERPA regulations.
  • Accessible to students for questions during drop-ins up to six hours a week.
  • Processes requests for transfer credit, course waivers, and course substitutions.
  • Promotes retention with academic coaching for at-risk students and students on probation.
  • Assists students in navigating potential career and transfer possibilities while in the community college setting.
  • Analyzes course enrollment to confirm that courses meet degree requirements for financial aid, A+ state aid program, and graduation purposes.
  • Refers and collaborates with faculty and campus offices for students' major considerations, academic issues, and personal concerns.
  • Assists students with utilizing various technology resources for educational goals, including the MySCC Portal system, SCC Connection, transfer guides and more.
  • Demonstrates appreciation and openness to make students feel welcome from all backgrounds including race, ethnicity, gender, sex, religion, sexual orientation, ability, age, and more.
  • Serves on College committees and makes recommendations that affect curriculum requirements, advising processes, program development and published materials.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academic Counseling and Transfer Services.

Allied Health

  • Advises and counsels allied health undergraduate students while integrating an effective, student-centered focus on academic advising, career exploration and financial aid counseling for semester course selections.
  • Coordinates advising for Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program, acting as secondary advising contact for Registered Nurse (RN), Health Information Management (HIM) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) programs.
  • Coordinates and maintains the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program admission waitlist and enrollment with follow up for prospective students.
  • Maintains specialized knowledge of all Allied Health programs (HIM, LPN, RN, OTA) and communicates requirements to prospective Allied Health students.
  • Monitors registration status and academic progress of current OTA students, coordinating with faculty to check in with students of concern.
  • Delivers informational presentations to prospective students about the RN program.
  • Collaborates with the Allied Health Advising Liaison with recruitment, waitlist, and admission for the Registered Nurse program.
  • Calculates transfer and SCC grade point averages for prospective and current allied health students for program admissibility requirements.
  • Acts as advising liaison for Occupational Therapy faculty.
  • Utilizes social media and develops strategies to communicate with current and prospective allied health students.
  • Scans and maintains allied health program applications for digital record keeping.

Starting Compensation: $33,479 to $43,523, commensurate with experience
This position is 100% externally funded (Perkins Grant).

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. During peak periods of registration two nights a week - Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Education, Behavioral or Social Sciences or related field. Master's degree preferred. Math, writing, effective communication and computer skills are essential.  Minimum two years' related full time work experience with emphasis in adult education, counseling, student personnel, Human Resources or other post-secondary related experience.
